GRINGO - Xperimental (2010)

New album from Moçambiquean producer Gringo, and one that goes side by side with its title!! Xperimental is a conceptual album that comes from the combination of the words "Experience" and "Instrumental", where Gringo distinguishes himself in 4 musical genres, The Vintage, The Progressive, The Hi-Tech and The Soulful, and is exactly with this word that Gringo goes deeply and majestic!! Gringo uses several new ways to make his soulful sounds even more captivating than in his previous effort, opening new boundaries to his fascinating Instrumental Hip Hop world. The Dillanesque tinged beats of Bitologista opens a bit of a space for far rich and different elements like 80´s influenced beats, Future Funk, avant Jazz Funk, Brazilian Bossa, modern Electronica, New Grooves and more, but always keeping the identity, that reflects the most perfect, loyal and humble incarnation of Dilla!! Gringo´s definetly ready for a BIG contract and we´ll be here to support it (LABELS, WHAT ABOUT BEING VOLUNTEERS??)!! We´re proud to have this man as a partner - and last but not least - to review this awesome album!!

JAGA JAZZIST - One Armed Bandit (2010)

Jazzy and proggy modernism from Jaga Jazzist, a record that finds the group unafraid to to recall some of the adventurous instrumental Rock and Jazz aware prog of the 70´s onward without feeling like a throwback, and very much of the modern era. It's a lot of fun, even with a dizzying display of instrumentation, with synths and spacey keys, subtle programming, vibes, guitar, flute, clarinet, horns, banjo, mandolin, glockenspeil and more!!

BLOCKHEAD - The Music Scene (2010)

A survey of The Music Scene through the eyes, mind and fingers of longstanding Hip Hop and spacey beatcraft guru Blockhead!! Blockhead's way with a sample has been one of the reasons we've been on board so long, and it's as unpretentiously hypnotic as ever here, staying defiantly headnodding in a groove, while subtly innovating and floating in myriad stylistic variations without hitting you over the head with them. LORD NEWBORN & THE MAGIC SKULLS - Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls (2009)

Massively messed-up grooves, and a rare one-off collaboration between Money Mark, Shawn Lee, and Tommy Guerrero, all artists we've come to love for their own funky music over the years!! The sound here is as wild as you'd expect from the cover, a really trippy approach to Funk, spun out with the same heavy grooves you'd get on some of Lee's Funk sets for Ubiquity, mixed with the offbeat production modes that Money Mark brought to his early Mo Wax recordings!! There's a definite dose of psyche on most tracks, showing the increasing influence from this end of the spectrum on 21st Century beatheads, and the fuzzier edges make for a nice change amidst Lee's usually cleaner grooves. Some vocals appear on the album, but often buried down deeply in the instrumental mix, leaving most of the album's charm to come from fuzzy guitar, trippy keyboards, and heavy beats!!

Tracklisting:

1. A Phase Shifter I'm Going Through
2. Astro Blue
3. Dime Bag Conspiracy
4. Escape From Prism
5. Disco Loco
6. Rainy Day Dog

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Interstellar Soul: Voyage N.3 - Selected & Compiled By DJ GP (2009)

DJ GP is a man with some talented and eclectic ears, and he's really outdone himself this time around, coming up with a great array of contemporary 21st Century Soul grooves from around the globe, all of which are a lot deeper and more compelling than anything you might hear in the mainstream!! The sound here is cosmic as the 2 previous volumes, sometimes instrumental, but still plenty darn soulful and futuristic, with a vibe transiting from US to Europe to Africa, a thing that informs all the numbers. Most numbers are heavy on complex beats, keyboards and synths, and all tracks are presented in their entirety, not mixed together at all!!

NINO MOSCHELLA – Boomshadow (2009)

Fractured Avant Funk, raw leftfield Soul, and jittery, unpredictable bits of electronics on the outer edges, all with a human heartbeat and real depth of emotion, the best stuff yet from East Bay groover Nino Moschella!! Nino is combining off kilter sound washes and true blue Funk & Soul better than ever before, from bedroom beatcraft with bubbling synth and tripped out vocals, to emotive Soul baring numbers with horns, guitar, keys and all around fuller arrangements, it's all solid stuff, and he's clearly having a great time, while still getting over a genuine sense of Soul. A winner all the way!!

PEVEN EVERETT - Discography (Pt. 1)

A special gift from GGC Fam: the first part of Peven Everett´s discography!! Peven Everett is easily one of our favourite artists and an underexposed man of many talents whose work alternately covers the territories of House, R&B, Jazz, and Hip Hop. Everett, who was born in Harvey, IL, received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music at the age of 17. However, he ended up leaving to perform live with the likes of Betty Carter, Branford Marsalis, and Winton Marsalis. Since then, the multi-instrumentalist has played trumpet on a handful Jazz recordings (including Curtis Lundy's Against All Odds) and has become a prominent figure in Chicago's House and R&B communities. He collaborated with Roy Davis Jr. on the UK garage smash Gabrielle as well as the almost as brilliant Watch Them Come (as Men From The Nile). Though he had a number of 12" solo releases prior to 2002, that year was an extremely prolific one for Everett as an artist. In addition to releasing one of the most loved Deep House records of the year with I Can't Believe I Loved Her, Everett issued another excellent 12" (Soul Tempura), as well as a pair of Soul-driven albums on his Studio Confession label (Speed of Light and Kissing Game), between others. Peven is also a complicated character. Besides the fact that he is potentially the most multifaceted artist we know of in his weaving of various genres in single songs, as well as his ability to effectively perform varying styles, he is also by far the most prolific artist we know of baring dead 50´s Jazz artists like Chet Baker and co. Peven releases an average of 5 albums per year, and each on is a crisp statement of artistic mastery!! Enjoy this first piece of action!! DON´T FORGET TO SUPPORT PEVEN!! BJÖRK - Voltaic (2009)

Volta had been designed, Björk has said, as a journey, with the sound of fog horns and clanging bells linking individual tracks and artists from around the world making guest appearances, including Congolese band Konono No. 1, Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté, pipa virtuoso Wu Man, beat-master Timbaland, Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale and sublime chanteur Antony Hegarty. The New York Times called it "a 21st-century assemblage of the computerized and the handmade, the personal and the global". Voltaïc, then, is a remarkable, multi-media document of what happened after the record was completed, a journey of a different sort as the ever-evolving singer assembled her live band, made a collection of typically amazing videos and one-step-ahead remixes, and toured the world for two years, making headline appearances at diverse venues and large festivals, including Glastonbury, Coachella and even Harlem´s Apollo Theatre. She recorded the Voltaïc live album in one take at Olympic Studio in London with her new band, prior to her 2007 Glastonbury appearance, presenting the set she would play on tour songs from Volta and new arrangements of such older material. It's a stunning performance, featuring cutting-edge computer technology, an old-school horn section and a female, flag-toting Icelandic choir - "bursting with raw life", to paraphrase The Independent's description of Volta!!

TOSCA - No Hassle (2009)

No Hassle is the 2009 album by Viennese soundscape masters Tosca!! Forefathers of the nu-Balearic/cosmic scene of artists, Richard Dorfmeister (also one half of Kruder & Dorfmeister) and Rupert Huber have produced their most magical and mesmerizing album yet. A luxurious tapestry of analogue and digital sounds, submerged samples and live instruments. No Hassle evolves and expands into an hour-long ambient symphony. The title reflects not only the duo's laidback approach to making music but their whole philosophy of life!!
