DJ CAM - DJ Cam Presents InLove - Stories (2009) / Diggin (2009)

A special DVAN double feature from DJ Cam!! DJ Cam Presents InLove is a turn into both laidback Soul, jazzier numbers, and uptempo cuts from DJ Cam and singer InLove!! The set rolling from a sweet homage to Minnie Ripperton, to solid beat backed funky Soul, to piano & bass steeped jazzier numbers, with Paris based singer InLove's lovely vocals over the top. She's been a nice, laidback female blue eyed Soul foil for DJ Cam in the past, and this easygoing full length lives up to the promise first put down on the Soulshine album!! Diggin brings a batch of jazzy Soul sounds from DJ Cam with himself as DJ, InLove and players working some magic with Soul Jazz classics by Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Ayers, Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd and more, all laidback, soulful and jazzy!!

THE LAST 2009 POST!!

CR0-MAGNON - Cro-Magnon (2006) / Great Triangle (2007) / III (2008) / Mellow Out & Acoustic (2008) / The Remixes (2008) / 4U (2009)

keyboard-heavy grooves from Japan's Cro-Magnon, a real back-to-basics combo that works in a solidly 70s funky Jazz mode!! The core trio features keyboards along with bass and drums, and most numbers have a snapping simplicity that you'd be hard-pressed to find this nicely in a real session from the 70s, the kind of stripped-down grooves that always show up on one or two tracks on an older CTI or Kudu set!! There are some nice collabo´s in some albums, like the master Roy Ayers, Soil & Pimp Sessions, Steve Spacek and more!! Fantastic sounding!!

THE NEW MASTERSOUNDS - Ten Years On (2009)

Masterful instrumentals from New Mastersounds, still nailing it after all these years, from furiously funky uptempo gems, to more measured moddish numbers, to some spacier Jazz Funk tunes!! The group has been at this for long enough that each player's parts are perfectly intuitive with the others, but most importantly, without prettying up the gritty, raw Soul & Funk at the core. Eddie Roberts guitar work has never sounded better, the others are just as fantastic, with organ & piano from Joe Tatton, bass by Pete Shand and drums by Simon Allen!!

1. San Frantico

THE TIMELINE MOVERS - Timeline Movers Are Knockin´ On 54 (2009)

DVAN´s finally back to the block, and together the debut album from the prolific duo of GP & Serbian producer Vlada Stojanovic, side by side as The Timeline Movers!! It´s common to see a bunch of good Disco/Boogie compilations these days, but this time the duo did more than we could expect from a compilation like these, joining forces to select great tracks with that trademark we used to love!! There are some brilliant numbers from well known artists such as Luther Vandross, Billy Griffin, Grey & Hanks and Sister Sledge, but the point of attraction is what the duo call “diggin´” – less known and sometimes obscure tracks – going from Disco to Boogie to Jazz Funk to Club Soul!! Vlada signs the first CD and GP the second one, both with a perfect sense of groove, showing us that they exactly know what they´re doing. Titles include “Now I´m Fine” by Grey & Hanks, “I´ve Just Begun To Love You” by Dynasty, “Got To Love Somebody” by Sister Sledge, “Wanna Make It Good” by Tyrone Davis, “You´re A Star” by Starship Orchestra, “Shake Your Body” by Sunfire, “Don´t Touch It” by Maxx Traxx, “Something Else” by Logg and more!!

CLOUD NINE - Millenium (1993)

A great set of spacey jazzy grooves, and a rare album that was deleted immediately from the Acid Jazz catalog due to some copyright troubles!! The album's quite different than a lot of the other ones on the Acid Jazz label, with a spacey Soul sound that's a sweet blend of classic 70´s Jazz Funk and headier 90´s influences, all wrapped up in a groove that's super tight, and a sound that should have made these guys huge!! Features the amazing cut "Millenium", with soulful vocals, spacey production, and bubbling under electronics, which gives the cut a sound that's almost up there with 70´s work by Larry Mizell!!

MULATU ASTATKE & THE HELIOCENTRICS - Inspiration Information Vol. 3 (2009)

A stunner of a joint effort from Ethio Jazz Funk visionary Mulatu Astatke and Psyche Funk genre-busting combo the Heliocentrics, a record we had the highest hopes for and still find wildly above and beyond our loftiest expectations!! The collective touch on some classic Mulatu compositions, but the bulk of the material here is brand new, and purely collaborative, if you know the Helioecentrics or you know Mulatu, you can clearly hear what each bring to the table, and it works together brilliantly!! There's often a gritty Funk bottom end, the best drums and percussion, fat electric bass lines underneath Ethio Jazz inspired sax, trumpet, trombone and flute, swirling psychedelic flourishes with theremin and other effects that never take away from the groove. Mulatu's on vibes, percussion, Wurlitzer, drums and keyboards, and his compositions and the Helios trade back and forth throughout the set. There's some additional ethiopian instrumentation and atmospheric vocals in the mix on some tunes, and more of an astral, avant Funk vibe on others, but there's always a brilliant confluence of styles. Bottom line, the album is everything we wanted it to be and more, this will undoubtedly be favorite for years to come!!
